My name is C.J. Riley. I am a professor of civil engineering at Oregon Institute of Technology with a particular focus on structural dynamics and structural health monitoring. I'm passionate about engaging students with the tools they have in their pockets. You can find details of my published work at ResearchGate and connect with me on LinkedIn.
Some of my favorite papers that involve teaching with mobile devices are
Mobile Phone-Based Contact and Non-Contact Vibration Sensing for Structural Dynamics Teaching Laboratories (the basis of this website)
Using Mobile Devices to Teach Structural Dynamics and Structural Health Monitoring
Teaching Modal Analysis with Mobile Devices
Much of the work on this webpage was conducted while I was on sabbatical during the 2022-2023 academic year at Bauhaus University Weimar working with Guido Morgenthal and his team in the Chair of Modeling and Simulation of Structures. We characterized the iPhone LiDAR sensor for measuring vibrations in an article published here.
You can find resources related to my use of mobile devices to measure roadway bridge modal properties at the website of the National Institute for Transportation and Communities. My early work with iPods is summarized in this webinar video:
